7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio.
7-Zip is free software with open source. Most of the code is under the GNU LGPL license. Some parts of the code are under the BSD 3-clause License. Also, there is an unRAR license restriction for some parts of the code. Read 7-Zip License information.
You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip.
- High compression ratio in 7z format with LZMA and LZMA2 compression
- Supported formats:
- Packing/unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM

On 7-Zip's SourceForge Page you can find a forum, bug reports, and feature request systems.
7z is the new archive format, providing a high compression ratio.
- Open architecture
- High compression ratio
- Strong AES-256 encryption
- The ability to use any compression, conversion or encryption method
- Supporting files with sizes up to 16000000000 GB
- Unicode file names
- Solid compressing
- Archive headers compressing
- High compression ratio
- Variable dictionary size (up to 4 GB)
- Compressing speed: about 1 MB/s on 2 GHz CPU
- Decompressing speed: about 10-20 MB/s on 2 GHz CPU
- Small memory requirements for decompressing (depend on dictionary size)
- Small code size for decompressing: about 5 KB
- Supporting multi-threading and P4's hyper-threading
Compression ratio
Compression ratio results are very dependent upon the data used for the tests. Usually, 7-Zip compresses to 7z format 30-70% better than to zip format. And 7-Zip compresses to zip format 2-10% better than most of the other zip compatible programs.

The main features of 7-Zip
The main features of 7z format:
7-Zip also supports encryption with the AES-256 algorithm. This algorithm uses a cipher key with a length of 256 bits. To create that key 7-Zip uses a derivation function based on the SHA-256 hash algorithm. A key derivation function produces a derived key from the text password defined by the user. For increasing the cost of exhaustive search for passwords 7-Zip uses a big number of iterations to produce cipher key from text password.
7z is a part of the 7-Zip program distributed under the GNU LGPL.
Applications that support 7z archives: WinRAR, PowerArchiver, TUGZip, IZArc.
Compression 7-Zip with WinRAR 5.20.
